I was honoured to be a keynote speaker at the 27th International Congress of the Spanish Society of Journalism, held virtually in May 2021 due to the pandemic.
The keynote, delivered in Spanish on May 27, was titled, Expectativas y Engaños de la Innovación en el Periodismo (Expectations and Deceptions of Journalism Innovation).
In the talk, I examined how innovation in journalism was both enticing and deceptive. It drew on my research with UBC colleague Mary Lynn Young into innovation as a response to the crisis in journalism.
You can read more about this topic in our book chapter, Journalism Innovation in a Time of Survival, published in News Media Innovation Reconsidered (Wiley-Blackwell, 2021), edited by Maria Luengo and Susana Herrera-Damas.
The conference, Digital Transformation: Challenges and expectations for journalism, brought together academics and professionals to consider the challenges and opportunities of digital journalism.
It was organized by the Faculty of Communication of the University of Seville, and ran from 27 to 28 May.
